Here’s a breakdown of long-term maintenance and service milestones you’ll want to meet.
Oil Changes
There’s a reason why you keep hearing about how important oil changes are. They’re perhaps the simplest and most crucial thing you can do to maintain your pre-owned car.
In years past, the standard timeframe to change your oil was every 3,000 miles. However, new breakthroughs in synthetic engine lubricants have allowed cars to last anywhere from 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Beyond that, however, are more tiers of service to be aware of.
Additional Service Milestones
Beyond oil changes, here is a breakdown of the different tiers of service you should have done and their mileage markers:
- 7,500 miles: check your battery, tighten and clean loose connections, lubricate door locks and latches, get brakes checked
- 20,000 miles: replace air conditioning and cabin filters; inspect suspension; tie rod ends, brake linings, and parking brake
- 40,000 miles: change air conditioning and cabin air filters, check front and rear axle fluid
- 60,000 miles: check transfer case and manual/automatic transmission fluids
- 100,000 miles: replace engine belts
